Why Most Designers Never Land Their First Client Before a UX Design Challenge

If you’ve ever wondered why you still can’t land a UX job even after finishing a course, these are the four hidden reasons.

  • But you need a portfolio to get clients to hire you
  • So how do you get started? It’s a tricky circle!
Get 3 real-world case studies that proves they solve real problem (not Dribbble clones)
Projects mirror actual client briefs

Solving the Wrong Problems

Experience end-to-end project cycles
Handle real constraints (timelines, business goals)

Invisible to Decision Makers

Your portfolio exists, but the right people never see it.
LinkedIn content templates included
Learn where/how to share case studies

This UX design challenge changed my life! Before Mentorix, I was just watching YouTube tutorials and replicating designs. Now I have 3 real case studies in my portfolio. Got my first gig at a startup last week, all thanks to the practical projects we did! The real-world experience really helped me stand out.”

Elizabeth A.

UI/UX Designer

I was tired of design challenges that only focus on UI. This program taught me real UX – from user research to testing. Big difference! Now my portfolio actually shows my problem-solving skills, not just pretty screens.

Adebayo O.

Product Designer

I’ve reviewed hundreds of portfolios as a design lead, and I can always tell which candidates have real project experience versus those who’ve only done tutorial projects. I’m impressed by how Mentorix structures their design challenge. Most programs focus on creating dribbble-worthy interfaces, but this one teaches the real skills we look for when hiring: business alignment, user research integration, and strategic thinking. The projects are structured exactly like what we assign to our junior designers. If you’re looking to break into product design, this is the most practical training I’ve seen.

Lead Designer at Binmates

tbh, at first, I didn’t want to join this challenge. Another design challenge? I was tired but this was different. built my first real portfolio during the challenge. now working with 2 clients. worth every naira.
Dami

UI/UX Designer

Finally, a design challenge that teaches what bootcamps miss – the messy reality of real-world design. The projects mirror actual work scenarios, complete with constraints and stakeholder requirements. In my 8 years as a product owner, these are the skills that have mattered most. This isn’t just another ’30-day UI challenge’ – and trust me, I’ve seen enough of those. I actually recommend this challenge to candidates who don’t make it through the interview process
Dumebi

Product Owner at Paymasta

I was at the point of giving up before I saw this design challenge. I knew my skills were not standard but I didn’t know what to do. But when I saw this challenge, I just said, let me give design one last chance and if this doesn’t work, I’ll just quit. But I don’t see myself quitting soon. Just finished my first project with an e-commerce client and they’re amazed by my process.

Peace Okoro

UI/UX Designer

After trying countless UI/UX courses and challenges, this was exactly what I needed. The focus on real projects rather than just theory helped me build a job-ready portfolio. Now I can confidently handle UX projects and present my design decisions to clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the 21-Day UX Design Challenge
When will I receive my daily challenges?
It depends on when you pay. If you pay in the morning, you’ll get your challenges in the morning. If you pay in the evening, you’ll get them in the evening. Many people prefer evening delivery so they can prepare for the next day, so if that’s what you want, make sure to pay in the evening.
I’m not obligated to give feedback during the UX Design Challenge, but if you need it, you can ask. Just reply to the email that’s delivering your daily challenges and request feedback. I’m happy to help when you need guidance.
It depends on how fast you work. Typically, if you’re efficient, it should take about 2 to 4 hours per day. Some people may need up to 6 hours depending on their pace and how deeply they engage with the challenge.
Yes, you need prior understanding of what UI/UX is and how to coordinate a project. This is not for absolute beginners. You should already know the basics before joining because this challenge is self-paced and I won’t be teaching you how to do a project from scratch.
At the end, you’ll have a portfolio with 3 real-world case studies. I also provide you with case study templates delivered via email in Figma. All you need to do is duplicate or copy them to your own drafts and use them. Plus, you’ll get daily content templates if you want to share your progress on social media.
It’s a simulation of a real-life project. You’ll get the experience of what it’s like working in a company and solving real problems, but it’s not an actual client project. Every day comes with explanations on what to do and resources if you need extra help.
Most challenges out there are just UI design challenges that teach you to design pretty interfaces. This is very different. I focus on UX and teach you skills like building scalable design systems, which is what companies are actually hiring for. If you check job boards now, you won’t see many entry-level jobs or internships. You’ll see roles like “Founding Designer” that require advanced skills. That’s what this challenge prepares you for. It’s hard to find anyone else teaching scalable design systems, and this challenge does exactly that.

No, there are no refunds. Make sure you’re ready to commit before you pay.
This is a UX Design Challenge, not a UI challenge. If your UI skills aren’t strong, you need to work on that separately before joining. I won’t be teaching you how to make your UI look good. You should already have a solid foundation in UI design before starting this challenge.
